Kykeon (pronounced Key-key-on) is an original play I wrote, produced, and directed as a invited staged reading during my Syracuse University Honors Thesis.
The following document is a copy of the final thesis paper detailing the reason for, and construction of, Kykeon.
This was the culmination of many months of hard preparation and many prior projects' inspiration that prepared me in my exploration for a new way of creating meaningful art.
The thesis catalogues a guerilla-style approach to new-work creation and a method of reimagining old myths in an attempt to bring back new ideas forgotten to our modern-day culture to explore themes from a new perspective.
The following document is the full script of Kykeon as it stands in it's 5th draft.
The plot follows Plato on a journey from Athens to Eleusis to partake in the forbidden Mysteries while simultaneously traveling through flashbacks of the popularity and eventual death of his mentor Socrates. The play attempts to understand why death can be a wonderful thing and the joy in accepting the fate of the universe. Kykeon was J.B. Poulin's reimagination of The Hymn To Demeter and accompanying myths which strives to bring characters and events from these forgotten stories to light.
